KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA (June 25, 1:10 p.m. ET) – The Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association has unveiled a public education campaign targeted at litter reduction.

MPMA President Lim Kok Boon told reporters that the industry raised 600,000 ringgit (US$188,000) for the “Don’t Be a Litterbug” campaign, which includes newspaper advertisements, printed plastic shopping bags with anti-litter messages and projects like working with school groups and beach cleanups.

Lim said the campaign budget is not a “terribly big amount” of money, but he said it will leverage with more government spending supporting waste reduction and recycling.

Last year, Malaysia’s government started requiring large retailers and stores to not give out free plastic bags one day a week, as part of an effort to reduce litter.

Lim unveiled the litter ad campaign at MPMA’s annual dinner in Kuala Lumpur.
